Discover the meaning of Advent 2 and how to embrace peace during the second Sunday of Advent. Includes scripture readings, reflection, and practical tips for living in God’s peace.

What Is Advent 2?

The second Sunday of Advent focuses on peace—a peace that transcends chaos and invites us into God’s presence. This week, we light the second purple candle on the Advent wreath, known as the Bethlehem Candle. It symbolizes the humble birth of Jesus and the angels’ proclamation:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests” (Luke 2:14).

Advent 2 Scripture Readings

  • Isaiah 11:1–10 – A vision of harmony under God’s reign.
  • Romans 15:4–9 – Hope and unity through encouragement.
  • Matthew 3:1–12 – John the Baptist calls us to prepare the way for the Lord.

These passages remind us that peace is active—it requires preparation and transformation.

Advent 2 Theme: Peace Comes Into Chaos

Peace is not the absence of trouble; it’s Christ’s presence in the midst of it. This Advent, create space for peace through:

  • Simplicity – Focus on what truly matters.
  • Stillness – Make time for prayer and reflection.
  • Forgiveness – Heal relationships and restore harmony.

Practical Ways to Celebrate Advent 2

  1. Light the Second Candle
Pray: “God of peace, fill our hearts and homes with Your presence.”

  2. Slow Down
Practice “Slow Advent” by resisting the holiday rush and savoring the season.

  3. Acts of Reconciliation
Reach out to someone and offer forgiveness or encouragement.

  4. Create a Peaceful Space
Light candles, play soft music, and invite God’s peace into your home.
