The Third Sunday after the Epiphany, Year B – 2024

EPIPHANY 3

THE INTROIT: Psalm 97. All ye Angels of God, fall down, and worship before him : Sion heard of it, and rejoiced, and the daughters of Judah were glad. Ps. Ibid. The Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof : yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof. GLORY BE..

THE COLLECTS: Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us. We beseech thee, O Lord, favourably to receive the prayers of thy Church : that all adversity and error being done away, she may serve thee in untroubled freedom. Through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord. Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.  O God, who by the fruitful virginity of blessed Mary hast bestowed upon mankind the reward of eternal salvation : grant, we beseech thee, that we may know the help of her intercession, though whom we have been accounted worthy to receive the Author of our life, Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord.

FIRST LESSON:  Isaiah 62:1-5

[1] For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. [2] The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name which the mouth of the LORD will give. [3] You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. [4] You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My delight is in her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. [5] For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

PSALM 96

[1] O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!
[2] Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
[3] Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!
[4] For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.
[5] For all the gods of the peoples are idols; but the LORD made the heavens.
[6] Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
[7] Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
[8] Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!
[9] Worship the LORD in holy array; tremble before him, all the earth!
[10] Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns! Yea, the world is established, it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”
[11] Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
[12] let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the wood sing for joy
[13] before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.  Glory be to the Father……

THE EPISTLE: Romans 12:16:

Brethren: Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

THE GRADUAL: Psalm 102. The heathen shall fear thy Name, O Lord : and all the kings of the earth thy majesty. When the Lord shall build up Sion : and when his glory shall appear.Alleluia, alleluia. Psalm 97. The Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof : yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof. Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Saint John 2:1

And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

THE OFFERTORY: Psalm 118. The right hand of the Lord hath the pre-eminence, the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass : I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.
